History of Alba Home For Autistic Rehabilitation Foundation

The school (foundation) took off in the year 2000 from a rented building at 71, Polytechnic Road, opposite Ibadan Polytechnic main gate, Sango, Ibadan; Oyo State of Nigeria, as a day school with Omololu only and a handful of other children, with the hope of moving to its permanent day/residential site. That was achieved on a piece of land donated by the Oyo State Governor, Late Chief Lam Adesina (may his gentle soul rest in perfect peace) on the 12th of June, 2007 at 1, Vine way, Forest Hill Estate, Jericho GRA, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Some Facts

1

Special Educators

Special educators sourced from special education department, faculty of education, University of Ibadan, and Federal School of Special Education, Oyo, both in Oyo State were recruited both on full-time and part-time basis.

2

Awareness about Autism

Awareness, about autism and its related disorders, was very low as at the time the school started. The idea then was, to group persons with this kind of disability together, with others suffering from down syndrome, dyslexia, hearing impairment and the like.

3

World Class Facilities

As of today, it is important to make the already existing boarding facility, a world class institution, where persons with only autistic conditions can get maximum attention from trained specialists. Alba Home For Autistic Rehabilitation Foundation was registered as a corporate body on the 11th day of June 2014, with registration number CAC/IT/NO70077

CHARACTERISTICS/EARLY WARNING SIGNS

There are certain facts that parents with Autistic children need to know. This was well documented in an article written by Dr Biodun Ogungbo in a Punch newspaper publication in January 2014.
Given the obvious challenges of persons exhibiting this condition, the management of the school envisages that there might be problems and difficulties of a different nature in housing/boarding both male and female autistic persons on the same premises, given close proximity of the two hostels. Hence, at present, it accepts only males. This is not gender insensitivity on the part of the organization, but a challenge. To this end, the foundation has an advanced plan to establish another school for FEMALE Autistics in Lagos, based on the requests we receive regularly from the families of autistic persons in Lagos State. Nevertheless, whenever we are able to expand the needed facilities with capable personnel, we hope to admit female autistic persons.
